This is the first in a series of regular news articles from SWTBC. Owing to technical issues the first few are published retrospectively.

It was with sadness in their hearts that the Town’s bowls players took to the greens on the opening night of the North West Essex League last Wednesday, 7th May 2025, as the games followed the funeral, earlier in the day, of a much-loved former president, Rhidian Morgan. A stalwart of the Club since he arrived in the area after retirement from the Met. Police, so proud of his Welsh heritage, always happy to share a tale and ever friendly to old and new members alike: he will be missed.

One hopes Rhidian was pleased to witness, from his new vantage point, the 6 – 2 away wins for both the A and B teams against Elsenham and Quendon respectively. A promising start as the A team seek to go one better and take the League title this year and the Bs hope for a quick promotion. The C team lost 2 – 6 to Dunmow B, but there were promising debuts from a number of new members on what was quite a chilly evening at the Abbey Lane ground.

The first Essex and Herts Seniors League game had been on Tuesday afternoon: having finished runners up in the two previous campaigns, the Walden side had a pleasing 6 – 2 home win against Epping in their quest to finish one place higher this year.

The Steeple Bumpstead League side got off to a competitive start on a bright Friday evening with the three-rink contest finishing one rink each and one tied. Unfortunately, home advantage told, Haverhill winning on aggregate score.

A friendly on a very pleasant Saturday afternoon down the road at Clavering was a fitting end to the first week of the season.

New members are welcome. Please do come down on a Monday club night (from 6pm). where you will find friendly faces around to help you get acquainted with the club and the game. Bowls is a game for players of all ages and most fixtures are outside working hours.
